Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County Commemorates 40 Years with Rubies and Rodeo Gala Celebration
(Wakefield, RI) October is designated as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” and DVRCSC is commemorating this Ruby anniversary with a dinner and auction on Friday, October 26, 2018.
The event, which will run from 6:30pm to 10:30pm, will be held at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown. This fun-filled night will feature music by the band SUGAR, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, food stations and sweet treats. Guests are encouraged to dress in festive, event themed attire.
Mary Roda, Executive Director of the DVRCSC, notes that she is “very proud of work the DVRCSC has accomplished over the past 40 years. The community has always generously supported the agency’s efforts to serve the complex needs of domestic violence victims. All of the agency’s services – court, residential, clinical – are provided free of charge regardless of the clients’ ability to pay. None of this would be possible without the commitment from our donors.” It is anticipated that this Gala event will generate over $100,000, all of which will be designated for agency programming.
In 1978, a group of young mothers met around a kitchen table to explore women’s issues in their community. With no paid staff and no equipment, these visionaries opened the Battered Women’s Project in the annex of the Hope Valley Baptist Church and incorporated as the Women’s Resource Center of Wood River. Today, in 2018, The Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County (DVRCSC) marks 40 years of providing a comprehensive range of services for victims of domestic violence and their children. DVRCSC is the only agency in Washington County that specifically addresses the needs of abuse victims. A majority of clients have incomes of less than $10,000/year. Last fiscal year, the DVRCSC provided over 7,100 services to nearly 1,100 clients. Over 3,700 bednights were provided in both the Safe Home and Permanent Supportive Housing Units.

We asked Rhythm & Roots fans to “keep the vibe alive” after last year’s cancellation, and you delivered. You had faith that we’d put together a diverse lineup for the 23rd Rhythm & Roots festival, and it was a great success.
It takes an extended family of hundreds of volunteers to produce a three-day festival of music, food and dancing, with 1,000+ campers, 24 bands and more than 40 performances on three stages. The jobs are big and small, but each task is essential. Artisans and food vendors, many of whom have been with us from the beginning, brought their own flair to the festival.
It was rewarding to see everyone working together – face to face! – for a common goal: to create a musical experience that will be remembered for years to come. A 2020 without Rhythm & Roots has made us even more grateful for your hard work and for the music lovers and dance enthusiasts who make R&R a ‘must-do’ every year. Thanks go to each one of you.
We’re already planning the 24th Rhythm & Roots Festival, set for Sept. 2, 3 and 4, 2022.
Let us know your favorites and any new bands you’d like to hear because roots music is constantly evolving. We’ll keep you informed as the lineup develops.
From Creole to Cajun, this one has it all. What, you need more? Fine, how about folk, funk and rock? This little jam hosted by our neighbors to the south gets back in action with sets from Donna the Buffalo, John Hiatt, local piano whiz Veronica Lewis, Ward Hayden & the Outliers and a score more.

Great news!! Rhythm & Roots Music, Dance and Food Festival
is happening on September 3, 4 and 5, 2021
at Ninigret Park in Charlestown RI
After a long dry year and a half without live music and festivals, we know you are as excited as we are to gather and celebrate, so make sure you’re not left out. Due to the probable state and local limited capacity mandates, tickets will be in short supply this year, so be sure to reserve your spot early, as our allotment of available tickets is limited and will most likely sell out.
So, this brings up the big question — how do we proceed to plan (and attend) a festival safely around the limitations necessitated by the Covid virus? For starters, we are adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the State of Rhode Island for large events. These mandate that there will be a limited amount of attendees allowed on site, and that we follow guidelines for mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing and all of the other CDC protocols.
These rules are changing and loosening up every couple of weeks, and we are anticipating that the situation will be much more advantageous for the festival by the end of the summer. In our favor is our new governor, Daniel McKee, is an advocate of tourism and opening up the parameters for large events and festivals in the state. Whatever occurs though, our main concern will be the health and safety of all of our festival patrons. Please be assured that we will do whatever is necessary to keep everyone safe and secure.
Tickets go on sale May 12 at 10:00 am, so be sure to get yours ASAP! You don’t want to miss out, but tickets will be limited, and if you snooze, you may lose. Thanks! Stay safe, get vaccinated and we hope to see you on Labor Day Weekend! “Keep the Vibe Alive In 2021.”

23rd Rhythm & Roots Festival Features Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi, John Hiatt, Uprooted featuring Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root
Headliners Join Richard Thompson, Donna The Buffalo, and more Tickets on Sale May 12 for Labor Day Weekend Festival, Set for Sept. 3-5
CHARLESTOWN, R.I. –– Lagniappe Productions is thrilled to announce that the 23rd Rhythm & Roots Music, Dance, and Food Festival will resume Sept. 3-5 at Ninigret Park with many of the well-loved musicians who agreed to play last year.
“Fans have been ‘keeping the vibe alive’ since the festival was canceled in 2020,” said Chuck Wentworth, whose family-run Lagniappe Productions puts the festival together every year. “Live music eases our minds in troubled times. After the year we’ve just had, 2021 will be a real celebration – but a safe one.”
Rhode Island health and safety mandates require smaller crowds than in the past, so a limited number of tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on May 12 at rhythmandroots.com. The 2021 festival will spotlight Uprooted featuring Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root on Friday, Sept. 3, John Hiatt on Saturday, Sept. 4, and Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi on Sunday, Sept. 5.
The Labor Day weekend festival brings together music fans, dancers, campers, and families for dozens of performances, food of every variety, artisans’ handmade wares, and a reunion-like vibe that’s been described as “chill but lively at the same time.”
Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and noon on Saturday and Sunday, with performances starting one hour after opening through 11 p.m. Prices range from $49 for Friday night to $250 for three-day camping passes with full festival access. For the lineup, which is still evolving, and to buy tickets, visit rhythmandroots.com or call 401.783.3926.
Producer Chuck Wentworth, who is marking his 41st year in the music business, has signed most of the musicians who had planned to perform in 2020.
The acclaimed songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson, who will perform Sunday, has influenced musicians as varied as Robert Plant, Don Henley, and David Byrne during his 50 years in the business. Traditionalists will enjoy Dirk Powell’s Appalachian-style banjo and fiddle, which earned him four Grammy awards. Performances are planned for both Saturday and Sunday. Fan favorites The Pine Leaf Boys, Donna the Buffalo, and The Revelers among many others, will also return.
Wentworth says a new generation of fans will especially enjoy Uprooted as well as guitarist and songwriter Keller Williams’ bluegrass/folk/reggae/electronica blend of acoustic dance music.
“I’m seeing more and more young people involved in the music scene,” Wentworth says. “The younger generation of musicians is just amazing, and they’re building on the musical traditions that came before them and adding this whole modern spin on it.”
Rhythm & Roots has always been about a blend of traditional and new, young and old, family reunions and hangouts with new friends. This mixture is based on a cultural appreciation seeded in Wentworth during multiple annual trips to Louisiana starting in the mid-1980s.
“I discovered that down there there’s an entire culture unto itself that’s unique, and that’s when I discovered it wasn’t just a music culture, it included music, dance, and family all rolled into one. I took all of that experience and tried to bring that into the festival.”
Wentworth says Friday’s headliner, Uprooted, will perform their multi-platinum album When I Woke in its entirety at Rhythm & Roots. Frontman Michael Glabicki has taken Rusted Root’s music, reinvented it, and added more percussion, female vocals, and new material. The previous band is best known for the jubilant, “Send Me On My Way,” featured in Ice Age and a dozen other films and TV shows.
John Hiatt, the prolific and influential guitarist, and piano player has earned nine Grammy nominations and has been writing songs professionally since he was 18. His country, rock, blues, and Americana music, set for Saturday night, has been recorded by artists as diverse as Iggy Pop and Rosanne Cash.
Rhiannon Giddens, well-loved by Rhythm & Roots fans for her work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, is performing Sunday with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, who brings African and Arabic influences to Gidden’s classically trained voice and skilled banjo and fiddle playing. The pair just released They’re Calling Me Home, an album recorded in six days during the pandemic lockdown in Dublin that explores the music of their native and adoptive countries.
Straightforward traditional music, traditional-with-a-twist, or something entirely new – all will be showcased during the Labor Day weekend festival. Wentworth, who brings it all together each year with the help of hundreds of volunteers, is guided by his passion and a bit of manipulation.
He hopes to keep families coming so the children will be exposed to different kinds of music. The man who plays the blues to settle his grandson for a nap, says, “Even if they’re not consciously listening to it, it still filters in.”

While the Covid pandemic is not over we are starting to see glimmers of hope in restrictions being eased and familiar places that we used to frequent gradually opening up again.
We also see that optimism in the loved ones that maybe we haven’t been able to see for a while, or have only seen through the lens of a phone or computer until now.
I call them the faces of hope and they are the ones who will get us through to the other side of this unprecedented period.
They are also the inspiration for the images in my newest collection of works.
My hope is that in these faces you see the optimism and inspiration you need to get yourself through as you continue Riding the Covid Coaster.
Born and raised in Rhode Island, there has never been a time when Vincent Castaldi was not an artist, following the muse; studying fine art, drawing, pottery. In junior high school he attended Rhode Island School of Design Jr. School Program and later returned to RISD to study fine art, illustration, caricature, children’s illustration and editorial art. In between he worked as a teacher’s assistant and youth art instructor. After graduating, as a participant in the RISD European Honors Program he traveled to Rome where he studied culture and language while continuing to study and practice drawing and painting. As his artistic vision grew and refined, he added layered elements of collage, using his notes, scribbles and sketches as the base element, allowing them to peek out from underneath his pastels like glimpses into his psyche; the heart and inspiration of his art.
From Rome to Boston, and back to Rhode Island, Vincent’s work has developed and elaborated on these techniques with layered figures, and thematic layering as well; whimsy, introspection, longing, liberation, and always striving after beauty.

In this exhibition there are examples of various collected works.
The small still life works: “Still Life with Apples and Pitcher” and “Still Life with Wine Jug” are part of a series created for the Providence Art Club’s 2012 annual Small Picture Show.
“Landscape with Windmill” (16″ x 20″) is a landscape study in oil pastel with touches of oil paint; part of a series created for his one-man show at the Rossoni Gallery in 2013.
Other pieces shown here are the first in a series that Vincent is currently developing. While watching a play at The Gamm Theatre one evening, Vincent found himself completely distracted by the visual beauty of the sets and decided to create a series of paintings inspired by those images. Using the theatre photo archives, he is currently working on a new group of paintings. Featured here are works based on “Macbeth,” “Top Girls,” and “Elephant Man.” The entire series will be shown in the Spring of 2015 in Vincent’s upcoming one-man exhibition at the Providence Art Club.
Congratulations to Vinny Castaldi!! Vinny’s work has been selected for exhibition in the Providence Art Club Nationwide All Media Open Juried Exhibition. From the almost,200 submissions received, only 53 artists were chosen by exhibition juror Claudia Seymour.
This exhibition runs from April 21 through May 9, 2014. The exhibition juror will assign cash prizes on Saturday, April 20 after viewing the works in person. Artists selected to receive these cash awards will be announced at the opening reception on Sunday, April 27th.

Rossoni Gallery
Please join us on Friday, September 20 from 5-9:00 pm when the Rossoni Gallery in association with Mixed Media Publicity | Promotions, will host an exhibit of the most recent works of art by Rhode Island resident and RISD graduate Vincent Castaldi.
How are you drawn to a work of art? Do you gravitate toward bright colors or soft tones? Will the size or structure of a piece command your attention ? Sometimes, like magic a piece captures your imagination–such are the works of Vincent Castaldi.
Vincent will be exhibiting some of his modestly sized earlier works, oil pastel on paper, matted and framed and some of his new works which are oil pastels painted on larger stretched canvases.
The subject matter of his earlier work is figurative and illustrative often depicting fantastical dreamlike characters that seem to invite you into their story. The newer works are figurative as well but lean toward abstraction with an evolving theme — a metamorphosis of one’s soul.
I invite you to come see for yourself on the 20th. If you cannot make it, please visit another day — show will run until October 20.

Back by popular demand, Mixed Media artist, painter and illustrator Vincent Castaldi features new art work at The Cabot House. He will be there on Thursday, April 28th from 5-9pm. The Cabot House is located on 555 Quaker Lane, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Also visit Facebook to “Like” the Cabot House Gallery.
Artist Vincent Castaldi was born in Providence and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island. Discovering his interest and ability in drawing as early as elementary school, he began to develop his artistic skills by participating in many art, drawing, and pottery classes. In junior high school, Vincent was accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design Junior School Program figure drawing classes.
In high school, Vincent completed many accelerated art classes. His artistic ambitions grew further in the form of teacher’s assistant and youth art instructor. Outside of school, Vincent also started his own part time business “Signs Unlimited” designing and painting signs for local organizations.
In Spring 1982, Vincent Castaldi was accepted into the freshman class of The Rhode Island School of Design. Majoring in illustration, he elected such courses as caricature, editorial and children’s illustration. In 1985, his senior year, he was accepted into the RISD European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. While studying the Italian culture and language, he continued to develop his art in the form of drawing and painting. Upon the advice of a visiting professor, Vincent introduced the element of collage into his artwork as a way of describing shapes of color and texture completing a series of collage portraits that were exhibited as his senior degree project. In June of 1986, upon his return from Italy, Vincent graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from The Rhode Island School of Design.
After graduation, Vincent presented his illustration portfolio to various newspapers and magazines in the Providence and Boston areas. While acquiring several freelance assignments, he found that his work did not always fit into the mainstream illustration mode. Around that same time, Vincent was offered to include his series of collage portraits in a group show in a Boston gallery (Gallery Fotene).
To date, Vincent continues to show and sell his paintings locally, nationally, and even internationally. He has received awards in several juried shows and has donated many pieces over the years to local charities, including two pieces per year to “Spurwink RI/The Gail Badessa Memorial Fund”.
Vincent Castaldi’s portfolio of artwork includes series of portraits, landscapes, still-lifes and abstract images.
