Rhythm & Roots Festival celebrates 20 years Sept. 1-3 in Rhode Island

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. >> The region’s largest, most elaborate Labor Day weekend musical party, the annual Rhythm & Roots Festival, which takes place each year just a few minutes over the border in Rhode Island, turns 20 this year — and, boy, are they getting ready to celebrate.

To mark the milestone, producer Chuck Wentworth’s Lagniappe Productions has added a fourth day of camping on Thursday, expanded the actual festival from 2½ days to three full days — with performances now starting at noon Friday — and put together a lineup as strong as any Rhythm & Roots has ever seen.

Rhythm & Roots is suitable for the entire family — with a dedicated kids stage. It takes place on four stages, one of which is a covered dance tent, in spacious Ninigret Park, a South County park (adjacent to Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge) on the grounds of a sprawling former naval auxiliary air station. This year’s festival includes 29 performers, including four Grammy winners and five nominees.

Headliners this year include Roseanne Cash, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (also performing at Infinity Hall in Norfolk on Thursday night) and The Mavericks.

This week’s Ear Bliss offers a preview of some of the performers scheduled to appear at next weekend’s 20th annual Rhythm & Roots Festival. The festival runs Friday through Sunday at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, and for its first time a full day of music on Friday. The 2017 edition once again mixes music scene vets the likes of The Mavericks, Roseanne Cash in her first R&R appearance, a reunion of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy along with old favorites like Marcia Ball, Natalie McMaster, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, and home state favorite Sarah Potenza joined by husband Ian Crossman. It is a full weekend of entertainment spread across four different stages with terrific food and drink available, not to mention an extensive array of crafts. In other words, never a dull moment when it comes to Rhythm & Roots. Joining those aforementioned performers are an array of talent from the roots music world and beyond including MarchFourth!, The Knickerbocker All Stars with special guests, The New Orleans Suspects with Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat fame, Shinyribs, Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys, Pine Leaf Boys, Ten Strings and A Goatskin, The Turtle Duhks, Los Texmaniacs, Courtney Granger and the Bad Hombres, Lilly Hiatt, Horace Trahan and the Ossun Express, Say Darling, a special Sunday Gospel session with Sarah Potenza & Christine Ohlman, The Revelers, and the Alex Meixner Band. GoLocalProv features Kurt Sodergren of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live

After 24 years and 11 records, Kurt Sodergren drummer and co-founder of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy says the band has no reason to slow down.

“Right now is as much our solid days as it was back in ’98,” Sodergren says.

The notorious swing and jazz band recently released a new album “Louie Louie Louie” that pays tribute to Louie Armstrong, Louie Prima, and Louis Jordan through the evolution of swing, jazz, and popular music.

Besides bringing the music of Armstrong, Prima and Jordan to thosewho might not already know about the artists, Sodergren says, “selfishly, I think we did it because these songs are really, really fun to play.”

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will perform at the 20th Annual Rhythm & Roots Festival on September 2 at Ninigret Park in Charlestown.
