Standard Time with Tom Nutile: Chart-topping Local Guitarist John Stein Shares his Compelling Story.
Tuesday, November 1st, 3-6 pm
Local Guitarist John Stein has a two-decades-long track record of success. His jazz releases often make a splash in the national jazz charts. He was planning his next project last year when he began to have health problems and was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease.
In his weakened state, not knowing whether he would be able to continue to play guitar and pursue his musical career, Stein worked with his record label, Whaling City Sound, to release a retrospective of his recorded work, called Lifeline. It would either be a memorial to his musical life and career if he did not recover or a placeholder until he became able to launch upcoming projects. Lifeline has been riding the top of the jazz charts, where it remained in the Top 10 for seven weeks. Fortunately, John is almost fully recovered and is able to play again with the passion and perfection that have been the hallmarks of his work. He marks his return to the concert stage with an engagement at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, Friday, Nov. 4th at 7pm.
John talks with host Tom Nutile and plays some of his recordings on Tuesday’s Standard Time, 3-pm.

Scullers Jazz Club, Boston
The guitarist John Stein spent part of the pandemic incapacitated by a rare autoimmune disease but somehow managed to put together a 26-track double CD retrospective of his distinguished career. Spanning more than two decades and 15 CDs as a leader, Life Line shows his mastery of mainstream swing, Brazilian samba and bossa, tango, and funk, with an uncommon touch, ear for harmony, and detailed fingerwork. Now recovered, Stein comes to Scullers with pianist Jesse Taitt, bass guitarist Ed Lucie, and drummer Mike Connors, with special featured guest Cindy Scott on vocals and flute.

On Nov. 4, Stein will celebrate the release of “Lifeline” with bassist Lucie, pianist Jesse Taitt, drummer Mike Connors, and special guest Cindy Scott on flute and vocals, at Scullers Jazz Club. When I talked to Stein at his home in Jamaica Plain, he sounded eager to play again. After all he’s been through, it should be as easy as breathing.
