Dave Zinno offers “string of well thought out jazz recordings” on latest release

DAVE ZINNO [bass] and his group, Unisphere [Mike Tucker-ts, Eric Benny Bloom-tpt/flg, Tim Ray-p, Rafael Barata-drm], have issued their second recording. In Zinno’s notes, he references Rio as his home base and discusses the fusion of North American and Brazilian music. As a result, one might expect a recording of soft and pretty cliched music. Not so, led by Mike Tucker’s consistently strong tenor work, this is closer to a hard bop exploration. Recorded 11/28 & 29/18, STORIES TOLD is the latest from Whaling City [#113] in a string of well thought out jazz recordings and offerings overall better than the tired old music issued by the names on major labels today. A mixture of 9 originals and covers [66:18], a good choice for those looking for adventure and not just familiarity.

Whaling City Sound Reviews in Cadence July Issue

A quick note about TERRY GIBBS’, 92 YEARS YOUNG: JAMMIN’AT THE GIBBS HOUSE [Whaling City Sound wsc 092]. Gibbs was brought out of retirement to make this recording [4/16] in his living room with a quartet [Gerry Gibbs-drm, John Campbell-p, Mike Gurrola-drm] playing 15 mostly originals [77:53]. Gibbs has slowed down from the frenetic pace with which he often played. The result is more gravitas and a lovely warm and laid back session on which all excel. Special mention of Campbell’s work and its many surprises. Very hip.

Also from Whaling Sound comes WOOD AND STRINGS [WCS 093], a relaxed duet with JOHN STEIN [gtr] and  DAVE ZINNO [b]. As with the Gibbs album, comes a full program of music [14 tracks standards & originals-71:37], a relaxed ambience, nicely packaged with meaningful liners. Professional and  un-perfunctory.

Greg Abate & Phil Woods “Kindred Spirits” review in papatamus for candence mag/April issue

Papatamus April 2016

Layout 1
Step right up folks lets see who has the last recording PHIL WOODS [as] made before he died. The January 2016 Papatamus covered 2, one on Chiaroscuro from 6/13 and one from Deer Head Records from 11/10/14 (Woods died 9/29/15 and he was active almost up to that date). Now Whaling City Sound has issued a double CD, KINDRED SPIRITS LIVE AT CHAN’S [WCS 077], with WOODS, GREG ABATE [as/ss], Tim Ray [p], John Lockwood [b], and Mark Walker [drm]. The 2 sets [2:04:02] here were recorded 8/11/14 and as one might suspect it is yet another fine Woods date spurned on by another front line saxman. I did not realize how close in sound Abate was to Woods and I would have guessed my ear could have picked out one from another but I could not always. Fortunately Whaling City has provided help in identifying who is playing when. Oddly, Whaling City has chosen to put intros and some stage gab at the end of each disc and here there is no doubt whose voice is whose. What is not a surprise is how good the music is as both saxmen have good track records; Abate continuing his and Woods strong to the last moment. 13 standards and some chatter familiar and fine. ~rdr
