Newport Live was previously known as Common Fence Music, originally established by Ed Nary in 1993 to make folk music accessible in Portsmouth, RI. Decades later, our concert series has evolved to providing diverse music across Newport County, continuing to attract audiences from all over New England to performances featuring GRAMMY award-winning songwriters and musicians, and other highly acclaimed music artists from across the globe.

Common Fence Music, a longstanding non-profit arts organization on the East Bay whose mission is to celebrate diverse music traditions by offering access to vibrant performances, has been renamed “NEWPORT LIVE.”

Executive Director Dick Lynn announced the 2022 Summer Season will begin on June 10, with Kyshonaperforming at the Norman Bird Sanctuary.

Dick Lynn stated, “We’re excited to open the summer season with Kyshona, a singer-songwriter who has been lauded by NPR Music, Billboard, and No Depression. Our goal is to make the Greater Newport region a year-round music destination and to present high-quality concerts throughout the year in venues on Aquidneck Island and beyond. Great music feeds the soul and nourishes the mind, and we can all use that right now.”

For the second year in a row, the Norman Bird Sanctuary and NEWPORT LIVE (formerly Common Fence Music) are presenting an Outdoor Summer Concert Series together. The series represents a unique programmatic collaboration between the two nonprofit organizations: bringing music and nature together for four unique evening performances throughout the summer months.

“We are delighted to build on last year’s success and continue this collaboration with NEWPORT LIVE,” said Norman Bird Sanctuary Executive Director, Kaity Ryan. “It is a wonderful way to connect the community with the natural resources we protect. The concerts bring people together for great live music outside at NBS during the summer.”

Changes the Game for Musicians
Interactive sheet music comes to the Apple Books platform

Music Sight Reader is the first of its kind. In a marketplace saturated with music education apps, hardcover sheet music, and sheet music for download, Music Sight Reader rises to the top as a new way for students, educators, and musicians to practice, teach, and enjoy sight reading. The platform is neither an app nor an e-book, but rather an app/e-book combo. Music Sight Reader is interactive sheet music for your virtual bookshelf.

Essentially launching both a library and a hybrid app all in one, the first release, “Classical Collection Vol 1”, is part of the Interactive Sight Reading Series. This runs on the platform, Music Sight Reader, available on Apple Books (formerly iBooks from 2010 to 2018) an e-book reading and store application by Apple Inc. for its iOS and macOS operating systems. Music Sight Reader runs natively within Apple Books on Apple devices such as iPads, iPhones and Mac computers.

The flagship “Classical Collection Vol.1”, includes classical duets, trios, and quartets (featuring Bach, Brahms, Mozart, and more), arranged for a given clef and instrument. The bass volume has been arranged for bass clef, while the guitar volume has been arranged for treble clef. This means that guitar players, for example, can now read both voices of a Mozart Sonata originally composed for piano, or a bass student can now read all parts of a Bach Chorale, originally composed for voice. Choose which part to play and Music Sight Reader will play the other parts, while the notes automatically scroll across the screen.

This cutting-edge format gives musicians around the globe fresh new access to some of the greatest music ever written, all without the trappings of standard sight reading apps (subscription plans and in-the-style-of arrangements). The pieces in ‘Classical Collection Vol 1” can also be purchased À la carte as individual works. À la carte pieces and collections arranged for piano are currently under development and will be released soon.

Bruce Gertz and Raleigh Green are onto something special with Music Sight Reader. Gertz, a Berklee alum/educator, and acclaimed jazz bass player and Green, a professional designer, developer, musician, and educator, built this music sight-reading program with the aim of carving out a completely unique and impactful educational space. Says Gertz, “We are really excited about the vast potential of what this product can provide to students and professionals all over the world.”

“This is a really wonderful idea for an interactive Apple Books/app. Of course, not only do you practice your reading but you play through classic melodies. And you can use Music Sight Reader for analyzing some of those great compositions. Congratulations!”  — Mike Stern

Music has taken saxophonist and composer Phil Scarff and pianist Lewis Porter to many places. They have performed and recorded around the world, as have their colleagues bassist John Funkhouser and drummer Bertram Lehmann. They’ve created music that takes listeners to exciting destinations. Their CD Three Minutes to Four is contemporary, East-meets-West jazz, where Indian raga merges with Western classical, where Ghanaian traditional fuses with improvisational, and where organic meets studied. Three Minutes to Four is where stunning performance creates pure jazz excitement.

The four musicians here have all been to the crossroads of world music and jazz, which is why this project really sings. Scarff regularly tours India and performs Indian classical concerts at major venues there. Porter, a prolific author and Ph.D., developed the only master’s program in Jazz History and has performed across the US and Europe with names like Liebman, Lovano, Bartz, and Ribot. Both Funkhouser and Lehmann are Berklee profs with a dizzying array of worldwide playing. Three Minutes to Four is at once deeply felt and eminently accessible, a glorious celebration of musical multiculturalism filtered through a prism of real jazz.

The critics are raving about Three Minutes to Four. Here’s what they have to say:
“Work at the highest level… With a soul.” – Jazz Quad
“Conceptually imaginative, impeccably performed.” – Downbeat
“Loaded with the smoking side of the east meets west… Real pros kicking it out.” – Midwest Record
“Absolutely beautiful.” – KCSB, Santa Barbara, CA

The Porter-Scarff Group features Lewis Porter, piano; Phil Scarff, tenor, soprano, and sopranino saxophones; John Funkhouser, string bass; and Bertram Lehmann, drums.
