Dave Howard performs throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He is a exciting musician influenced by many great jazz, blues and funk artists. David Howard is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He’s a guitarist, composer, arranger and leader on many recordings including “Souvenirs” featuring Kenwood Dennard. “Clouds”, “Almost Carefree”,and “Block Island Summer” with the Joe Parillo Ensemble, and “Autumn Leaves” with Dave Rasmussen Jazz Orchestra.

Dave has Performed tours and clinics in Europe, and has worked as a Composer and Performer on various jingles.

Some European Concerts and Clinics includes: Roccella Jazz Festival / Clinics with the Dave Howard Calabrese 5tet Project, Cortale’ Jazz festival, Calabria, Italy. Umbria Jazz Clinics with Berklee College of Music, Umbria, Italy and The Pepperoncino Jazz Festival , Calabria, Italy.

Dave leads his group THE DAVE HOWARD INITIATIVE in high energy live performances and recordings of contemporary jazz/funk original compositions.

Willie Myette

There is a way that most people do things. There are trends and styles; common mistakes and Murphy’s Law. However, Berklee College of Music graduate, Willie Myette has been bucking the system for most of his adult life. Shortly after graduating from Berklee in ‘96 with a degree in Film Music, Willie set out to live as a jazz performer. He started by returning home to Rhode Island, where his father had taught him piano.

Like those before him and after, he taught to make a steady income. Wanting to teach jazz and improvisation to his students, he looked for materials that mirrored his own free- formed musical upbringing. What he found was material that did not encompass the freedom and creativity that he was accustomed to. So, he wrote his own music for his young students. Giving his songs catchy titles like Jessica’s Blues and Dustin’s Da Man, JazzKids® was born with the goal of teaching young students how to improvise.

Willie has written almost a dozen books on teaching improvisation to young students. In addition, he has presented JazzKids at conferences around the U.S. and workshops in the United Kingdom. Soon, the attention at these conferences caught the attention of some very big names in the publishing industry. MelBay, a company best known for its guitar method, published Willie’s first collection of JazzKids songs. Soon, Alfred Publishing, perhaps one of the biggest names in printed educational music, signed Willie to create music for them.

Willie has not stopped there. We all know that old adage, “Those that can’t, teach.” Once again this mold has been broken in Willie’s case. While perfecting the JazzKids method in the 90’s, Willie was also busy performing and writing. In 2002 he met bassist and Berklee professor John Funkhouser. This meeting of the musical minds proved to be quite fruitful. Adding to the dynamic relationship that already existed between Willie and drummer Mike Connors, bringing Funkhouser aboard created a truly special musical group.

In 2004, combining his love of hiking and jazz, Willie formed the group Katahdin’s Edge with Connors and Funkhouser. Their 2004 release, Step Away on Myette’s own Incline Records label, garnered stellar reviews by the media. C. Michael Bailey from allaboutjazz.com wrote “This is a superb piece of avant- garde jazz that should satisfy fans from everyone from Harry Connick to Medski, Martin and Wood.”

Now was the time to hit the road. In September of ’04, the trio began their first North West tour. Willie remembers, “It was exciting to be bringing our music to the opposite end of the country. But, it was also scary not knowing how it would be received.” Well, their performance at MusicFestNW in Portland proved that this group had something to say and people were ready to listen. After launching into the funky groove of the CD title track Step Away, and displaying their “no holds barred” approach to jazz, the group was asked to double their set for the excited crowd.

After the tour, the group focused on radio play and future bookings. Katahdin’s Edge was added to the playlists of over 90 radio stations nationwide. This is an impressive feat for any independent record. With fans likening the group to the Bad Plus and E.S.T. Myette focused on creating new material for their next tour. In April, the band performed at the Triple Door in Seattle, a hot spot for some of the biggest names in jazz.

The future holds bright for Myette and Katahdin’s Edge. Their new album is being picked up by a record label and is due out January of 2006.

“Hiking a mountain is difficult,” says Willie. “You have to watch where you put your feet. Otherwise, you might have a really bad day. Music is like this too. You need to promote your art, but always remain true to your calling.”

Myette proves that he can walk that line. The road less traveled can still lead to spectacular and unexpected results.

Public Relations Assistant

Mixed Media is a national publicity company committed to promoting New Bedford’s Whaling City Sound, Innovative Music of Impeccable Quality, among other clients including Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in the Berkshires in August, Lagniappe Productions’ Annual Labor Day Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, RI among others.

We are looking for an intern to help assist in developing engaging content across client brands on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Description
Mixed Media’s well-established internship program provides top-caliber students an exceptional opportunity to explore and learn all aspects of publicity in a business. Interns gain valuable knowledge and insight into the music industry, and importantly, make contacts in the media in this competitive field.

Responsibilities include:

  • Asset creative team in conceptualizing to executing creative for all brands
  • Have a desire to be part of a fast-paced team working on multiple projects
  • Deep understanding of social platforms
  • Video editing skills, premiere or after-effects a plus
  • Photography skills a plus

Interns can be assigned to various clients, working closely with the owner Ginny Shea to assist in daily PR work including:

Media Relations
Creating electronic press kits and digital downloads via Dropbox for client feature story/review/airplay
Proofreading news releases/newsletters
Coordinating promotional bulk mailings to targeted mailing lists for traditional press, TV, and radio
Setting up digital downloads on SoundCloud
Research/data scraping for industry/media contacts
Email marketing blasts to individuals and organizations unfamiliar with client/company
Video uploads to YouTube
Develop media pitches to top-tier, mid-tier, and small print, digital, cable, network, and podcast outlets
Arrange interviews if any journalists express interest in learning more about clients
Mixing social and traditional media (press, radio, TV, internet) promotion campaigns
Follow up calls, social media messages, faxes, emails, postcard mailings for all packages mailed, campaigns average 6 weeks
Arrange interviews for artists with newspaper journalists, radio show hosts
Compile guest lists, arrange on-air CD/ticket giveaways, radio station ID’s/”drops”
Manage company’s online database, website, posting/blogging, client newsletters via MailChimp

Distributor Relations

Monthly upload of new release details (album, track, audio data and assets-art, booklet, sales sheet) to online distribution portal for online DSPs (Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, Pandora submissions)

Requirements For Applicants

Hours

Work schedule is 12 hours per week minimum commitment. Interns are assigned a fixed regular schedule based on their available hours. A set schedule allows interns to become familiar with projects/their responsibilities each week.

Qualifications

We look for star interns, students with a bright, positive attitude, intelligence, and potential. Other key qualities appreciated in our best interns are commitment, motivation, organization, responsibility, and professionalism. In addition, they are hardworking, personable, outgoing, fun, energetic and friendly, and therefore make a good fit and contribute to the great work atmosphere of our office. Candidates should be entering their junior or senior year of college. Excellent writing skills a must.

We offer the opportunity to observe, learn, ask questions, and be integrally involved in the business. Many former interns who demonstrated talent, interest, desire, and ability to contribute to the success of Mixed Media have been hired for part-time staff positions. If you excel, and we have no current openings at the time of your graduation, we will be pleased to do whatever we can to help you find your first job in the industry.

The goal of the program is to expose students to small business and all aspects of promotion so they can determine their own abilities and interests, and pursue their first career position having acquired knowledge, understanding, and confidence here.

College Credit or Volunteer for Experience

Credit is at college discretion (for example we’ve had students work 12 hours per week and earn 3 credits.) 

Must be enrolled in a degree program, graduates are not eligible

An ideal candidate would have either public relations, communications, marketing, art direction/graphic design, copywriting, photography or video editing/production background.

“When looking for an internship, no other stood out to me in the way Mixed Media did. I was intrigued by the clientele, website design, and featured photos of Ginny with some celebrities like Liza Minnelli. As an animal lover, the selling point was when I read ‘We have a Mixed Media mascot. Students allergic to dogs please take note’. Not only did this appeal to me for my love of animals, but for its evidence of personality. In this line of profession, personality is one of the most important qualities and I can think of no one better to demonstrate this than Ginny.
