He’s an international jazz/recording artist who tours the globe 225 days a a year, but on Friday, May 14 Greg Abate will stop by Spicewood and treat us to his sensational prowess on the saxophone.
From Fall River, Mass, Greg learned music through clarinet lessons in elementary school, progressing from there to Berklee College and lead alto sax for the Ray Charles Orchestra.
Later he ventured out as a post hard bop(more blues based) soloist playing jazz festivals and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada, most of Europe, the UK and Georgia, Russia.
Currently a recording artist for Whaling City Sound, Greg recently released Gratitude to glowing reviews and much international airplay. It’s just one of the latest in a long recording career that began with his first live CD, Birdland, in 1991 on the Candid label.
Greg is also an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Rhode Island College and a very active jazz clinician with co-sponsorship from the Conn-Selmer Instrument Company, conducting workshops and master classes. In 2016 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.
