Two hundred years ago, a New Bedford community of African Americans came together as one of the earliest congregations of the AME Church.

This congregation today represents one of New England’s longest Black enterprises in continuous operation. On Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, at 3:30 p.m., this 200-year history will be celebrated.

New Bedford native and nationally recognized baritone, Philip Lima, has brought together professional New England-based musicians including Greg Groover, Jr., in a program that highlights Black America’s 200 years of sacred and secular musical traditions in gospel, spirituals, classical, folk, and jazz. The 2-hour long event at the First Unitarian Church will feature song, including some audience participation, instrumental performance, narration, and even tap dance.
