The second annual Relix Live Music Conference is currently underway, with two days of panels, discussions and more set for Brooklyn Bowl, with a variety of leaders from around the live music world gathering to share and impart knowledge and insight from each of their unique experiences.
Below, watch a free stream of the entire 2018 conference, starting on Tuesday, May 8 with panels on livestreaming, festivals, the restoration of The Capitol Theatre, talent buying, a focus on touring with Portugal. The Man’s team and more, plus a conversation with Don Was and David Fricke. Tuesday night’s stream will also feature the We B-E-E Spelling event with music from Leftover Salmon and Andy Frasco.

On Monday night, the current lineup of Leftover Salmon played an hour and a half set of all of the songs from their newest album, Something Higher, to a packed audience of Salmon faithful at Bowery Electricin New York City. Tickets went on sale months in advance and sold out quickly. With newest members Alwyn Robinson on drums and Erik Deutsch on keys, the current lineup really brings the mountains of Colorado to the city of New York (both Robinson and Deutsch are from Brooklyn!).
Leftover Salmon likes to define their sound as “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass”, though last night’s show sounded more like “Polyethnic Psychedelic Jamgrass”, and much of that has to do with the addition of Deutsch on keys. The show opened with Vince playing Drew’s electric guitar while Drew played Vince’s acoustic.

Fred Farell’s deeply soulful, spiritually uplifting and simply but magnificently produced new album Distant Song celebrates the veteran jazz vocalist and lyricist’s return to the jazz world after 40 years in a unique wilderness of his own choosing.
Reconnecting like no time had passed with old friends and collaborators, jazz greats Dave Liebman (soprano and tenor sax) and Richie Beirach (piano), Farell finds fresh poignancy and purpose in emotionally compelling songs the trio penned decades ago. Thrilled to be back in their company, Farell allows his colleagues ample solo time and several lush and expansive tandem instrumentals.
Here’s hoping this trio won’t keep their distance any longer!

Abate and Cole at The Harwood
First up is The Greg Abate Quartet with special guest Richie Cole June 22 at the Harwood Museum of Art, 238 Ledoux Street. “This is a return engagement for two of today’s greatest alto sax players: Greg Abate and Richie Cole,” a press release states. “Last year they dazzled the sold-out Harwood crowd with a lively tribute to the late alto sax master, Phil Woods. This year they will perform original compositions as well as classical jazz tunes. Abate, a superior bop player, considers Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond and Phil Woods to be among his most important influences. Richie Cole has proven time and again that bebop can be quite fun. His ‘Alto Madness’ was essentially the idea that any tune, no matter how unlikely its source, could be turned into exuberant bop.”
New Mexico Jazz Festival
In 2016-2017, Taos Jazz Bebop Society presented shows that were affiliated with the New Mexico Jazz Festival. In 2018, the Society became an official presenter in the festival. The New Mexico Jazz Festival will run from July 14-29, with shows in Albuquerque, Santa Fe — and now Taos.

The unveiling of all ten R.I. Music Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 inductee exhibits will take place in the Hall of Fame museum space in Hope Artiste Village, Pawtucket, at 2:00 p.m. followed by the final 2018 RIMHOF Induction Concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Met. The James Montgomery Band will be performing followed by a retrospective tribute to Paul Murphy featuring Greg Abate & Channel One, James Montgomery, The Duke Robillard Band, The Groove-masters, and many past RIMHOF inductees and R.I. musicians who played with Murphy throughout the years.
The 2 p.m. unveiling of the inductee exhibits is free and open to the public; a ticket will be required for entrance to the 3 p.m. concert in The Met. Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door and can be purchased at www.themetri.com. All proceeds from RIMHOF’s annual induction events go toward creating the museum displays, acquiring recordings and memorabilia, and digitizing that collection for permanent online access for future generations
