14TH ANNUAL NARROWS FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

Few musical groups have achieved the kind of astonishing pop success as that little band of Cape Verdean brothers out of Providence/New Bedford called Tavares. Surely you recall the string of hits: “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” “It Only Takes a Minute,” and “Whodunit,” to name a few. These are songs that have earned an exalted place in the pantheon of pop music. In fact, they won a Grammy for their cover of “More Than a Woman” on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack.

“Tiny” Tavares, one of the brothers responsible for the band’s enormous achievement, has embarked on a solo act. That solo act debuts at the Narrows Festival of the Arts.

Normally, the emergence of a Tavares brother is reason enough for celebration. But there’s more. The band supporting Tiny as he rolls out his new act is the same rhythm section that supported and toured internationally with Tavares itself. John Harrison III (piano), Bill Miele (bass), and Jackie Santos (drums) were all a part of the rhythm section that took the Tavares dance pop juggernaut on the road around 1978 to 1980.

The festival show happens Saturday, September 13th and makes the Narrows Festival of the Arts, sponsored in part by New Bedford’s own acclaimed boutique label, Whaling City Sound, a mighty fine day indeed.

And to make it just that much sweeter, it’s free admission, and the outdoor, main stage bill also includes headliner Shemekia Copeland, Yarn, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. Lots of great music on Fall River’s historic waterfront, amazing sponsors, and the debut of Tiny Tavares’ solo act, complete with a band that helped the R&B/dance group reproduce the magic that made it so legendary. Catch this one, or you’ll be missing much more than an angel. You’ll be missing an awesome day of truly excellent music.
