FALL RIVER — On Sunday, Sept. 16, Debra Mann returns to the Narrows Center for the Arts to celebrate the much-anticipated release of her new recording, “Full Circle,” on the Whaling City Sound label. “Full Circle” features the music of Joni Mitchell, in celebration of her 75th year. Mann and her band of world-class jazz musicians, Dino Govoni (sax); Jay Azzolina (guitar); Dave Zinno (upright bass); and Marty Richards (drums) interpret the iconic music of one of the most influential and revered songwriters of the 20th century.
Mann is widely recognized as Rhode Island’s premier jazz pianist, composer, and vocalist. She has performed extensively over three decades throughout New England at jazz clubs, concert halls, and festivals.
Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 on the day of the show. Doors open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 7 p.m.

If the weather is good, the festival attracts about 5,000 people per day. Organizer Chuck Wentworth said he wouldn’t want Rhythm & Roots to get much bigger than that. “We don’t want to lose that laid-back, family vibe,” he said.
The Rhythm & Roots Festival, celebrating its 20thyear, dances into Ninigret Park in Charlestown this weekend, with three full days of performances — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — on four stages.
Headliners on the main stage include the Squirrel Nut Zippers and the Mavericks on Friday, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and MarchFourth on Saturday, Rosanne Cash and the New Orleans Suspects on Sunday.
But the heart of this festival may well be the dance tent, which shelters a big wooden dance floor. There’s Cajun and zydeco music all day long (and well into the night) and the tent is almost always crowded with dancers.
Rhythm & Roots grew out of the much-loved Cajun & Bluegrass Festival at the Stepping Stone Ranch in Escoheag, run by Chuck Wentworth and Franklin Zawacki. When they parted ways, Wentworth and partner Mary Doub created the Rhythm & Roots Festival.
For its first year, it stayed at the Stepping Stone Ranch but Wentworth, who now runs Rhythm & Roots on his own, said the new festival needed a more spacious and accessible site. “We were busting at the seams . . . Ninigret was right off Route 1, it had plenty of space, plenty of parking. It was everything we needed,” he said.

The festival includes a family stage, which will feature Keith Munslow, the Hot Tamale Brass Band, storytellers Len Cabral and Marc Levitt, and a Mardi Gras parade each day at 5:15 p.m.
Rhode Island native Sarah Potenza has been performing at Rhythm & Roots since 2011, and she’ll be there again this year. She said it’s one of her favorite festivals thanks to its combination of music, dancing and food. Plus she gets to see family and lots of old friends. “That makes it very special for us,” she said.
As for the festival’s future, Wentworth said he wants to take it one year at a time. He said the “rhythm and roots” category allows for a lot of different styles. He’s interested in the possibilities of more Latin music at the festival.
“I’d love to go down to Cuba and take a look at that music,” he said. “But some things don’t change. There’s always going to be a lot of dancing . . . I like the way we have it set up. If you’re going to get food, you have to go by the dance tent.”

Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County Commemorates 40 Years with Rubies and Rodeo Gala Celebration
(Wakefield, RI) October is designated as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” and DVRCSC is commemorating this Ruby anniversary with a dinner and auction on Friday, October 26, 2018.
The event, which will run from 6:30pm to 10:30pm, will be held at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown. This fun-filled night will feature music by the band SUGAR, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, food stations and sweet treats. Guests are encouraged to dress in festive, event themed attire.
Mary Roda, Executive Director of the DVRCSC, notes that she is “very proud of work the DVRCSC has accomplished over the past 40 years. The community has always generously supported the agency’s efforts to serve the complex needs of domestic violence victims. All of the agency’s services – court, residential, clinical – are provided free of charge regardless of the clients’ ability to pay. None of this would be possible without the commitment from our donors.” It is anticipated that this Gala event will generate over $100,000, all of which will be designated for agency programming.
In 1978, a group of young mothers met around a kitchen table to explore women’s issues in their community. With no paid staff and no equipment, these visionaries opened the Battered Women’s Project in the annex of the Hope Valley Baptist Church and incorporated as the Women’s Resource Center of Wood River. Today, in 2018, The Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County (DVRCSC) marks 40 years of providing a comprehensive range of services for victims of domestic violence and their children. DVRCSC is the only agency in Washington County that specifically addresses the needs of abuse victims. A majority of clients have incomes of less than $10,000/year. Last fiscal year, the DVRCSC provided over 7,100 services to nearly 1,100 clients. Over 3,700 bednights were provided in both the Safe Home and Permanent Supportive Housing Units.

It is with deep shock and sadness that we report the unexpected passing of Debra Mann, an acclaimed and supremely talented jazz singer, pianist and composer on our Whaling City Sound label. Her most recent recording, #FullCircle, featuring the music of Joni Mitchell, was released in August 2018. She had also released three CD recordings on her label, Jobe Records.
Her career was decorated with highlights. A Berklee College of Music grad, Debra was widely hailed as Rhode Island’s premier jazz pianist and vocalist. She performed at Symphony Hall Boston as a featured guest soloist with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra. She had the distinct honor of performing at the request of Frank Sinatra. In celebration of Women’s History Month, she performed with her trio on Ron Della Chiesa’s WGBHradio program “Music America.” She was a prized member of the regional jazz community, having shared the stage with artists including Dick Johnson, Herb Pomeroy, Gray Sargent, Marshall Woodall, Ted Casher, Jeff Stout, Ed Saindon Vibraphone, and many others. Dino Govoni, Jay Azzolina, David Zinno, Marty Richards, Jerry Leake, and Paul Angel joined her on our “Full Circle” release, recorded with Steve Rizzo, Stable Sound Studio.
She was also a passionate educator, on the faculty of Brown University and Wheaton College Massachusetts.
We at Whaling City Sound, along with the music community, will miss Debra’s extraordinary and elegant musical voice. We mourn deeply her passing and extend our sympathy to her family and friends.

It is rare indeed to catch a sighting of Joni Mitchell. The Canadian songwriter, chanteuse and sublime talent has not really toured much, or released an album of new material for that matter. The last time that happened was 2007. So what’s a Joni fan to do? Catch Debra Mann.
Mann is a Joni fan from way back, so much so that she’s taken to performing her songs. The Providence-based jazz artist will be performing a night of jazz-tinged interpretations of Mitchell’s music at Chan’s. The combination makes good sense, considering the fact that Mann is an outstanding jazz performer and so much of Mitchell’s oeuvre resonates with generous jazz overtones.
Debra Mann, pianist and vocalist, has performed in the northeast corner of the U.S. for three decades. Her own artistry was deeply influenced by Joni’s music—from her folk years through her more than deep exploration into jazz.
The reclusive Mitchell is widely regarded as one of the most influential and revered songwriters of our time. Her category-defying style links the worlds of acoustic music with rock, jazz, and classical. Her lyrical sense, phrasing and poetic imagery are as visual as they are musical. Certainly, with no chance of seeing the original, why not enjoy the next best thing?
This is not Mann’s first shot at covering Mitchell’s work. In fact, the first few times were so memorable that her fans were asking for an encore. As an added attraction, Debra’s band features the mega talents of Dino Govoni (sax), Steve DeConti (guitar), Dave Zinno (bass), and Marty Richards (drums).
So come by Chan’s for a night of great music as we celebrate the work of a gifted and influential artist being covered by a gifted and supreme talent in her own right. Ladies and gentleman, on piano and voice, Debra Mann!
