RI’s Coastal Cottages

On a quaint and unspoiled stretch of coast near Sand Hill Cove, a number of large-scale residential restoration projects are either underway, or are already finished.

These beautifully designed ocean homes, seven in total, have a style that is reminiscent of “Nantucket,” only with a dash of “Newport” for good measure. Each one has distinctive architectural panache and tremendous attention to detail. Interestingly, all started out as shanties, more or less, and the builder responsible for the work took the existing structures and either renovated them dramatically or expanded them with skill and style. One, an award-winning renovation project, even retained the original shanty footprint, and executed a sort of “vertical expansion.”

The man behind these projects is Matt Davitt, the president and visionary leader of Davitt Design Build, an award-winning architectural, building, and renovation firm located in West Kingston, RI. Davitt’s work in this (and many other coastal areas) has essentially boiled down to a virtual redefinition of the southern Rhode Island coastline. One man, one vision, one stunning architectural product.

The homes are beautiful,

shots of the properties which were renovated are remarkable, and the skill with which the complicated coastal regulations were handled was impressive. Davitt Design Build navigates the rough seas of coastal regulations

Dazzling craft earns firm recognition as 2011 “Regional Contractor of the Year” and helps homeowners realize their dreams

When Mary Sullivan, a homeowner with a needy property in a desirable coastal location, saw the work of Davitt Design Build, only one thing crossed her mind: “That’s the kind of company I want to rebuild our home.”

And rebuild they did. Davitt turned Sullivan’s modest “fishing shack” on the verge of demolition into their waterfront dream home. “We’re just so happy with the work,” she says, with excitement. “We built our retirement home a decade early!”

Turns out that many people talk with excitement about the work of Davitt Design Build. The award-winning builder/renovator has been wowing clients for three decades, with a particular métier for navigating the rough seas involved in the zoning and permitting of coastal/seaside/waterfront properties.

“We had seen Davitt’s work on other waterfront homes,” says Barry Morris, another satisfied client, whose petite, 1950’s oceanfront cottage was transformed into a stunning two-story home. “There was no doubt they were meticulous and talented. We just had no idea that anyone could do this kind of work, especially overcoming the zoning obstacles. The end result was more than we’d ever hoped for.”

The work of Davitt Design Build, especially on complicated coastal construction projects, comes with an assurance: that the firm will tend to the imposing regulations presented by Coastal Resources and DEM-type bureaus. Too often these regulations feel like roadblocks and dim the enthusiasm of homeowners. “Before we contacted Davitt, contractors told us it would take two years to get all the licensing and permits,” says Sullivan. “Then they’d say, ‘Give us all a call when you’re ready to go.’ That didn’t sit right with us.”

With its unique expertise, Davitt Design Build helped Sullivan attain all the necessary paperwork in two months, not two years. “The house went up in nine months and we never had a single problem.”

Matt Davitt, owner of the company, is modest about his work and his accomplishments. “We have a unique team-approach to every project,” he says. “Each one we take on is integrated, with our architect, our builder, and the homeowner all having input. And we become the principal contact for the homeowner with coastal regulators to make sure our designs and our clients’ goals are realized to everyone’s satisfaction.”

The Sullivan and Morris projects were perfect examples. “Davitt’s level of involvement and understanding of how to complete the process, and negotiate on our behalf,” adds Morris, “was really unexpected and very impressive.”

Since 1982, Davitt Design Build has crafted gorgeous homes and renovations, including many homes on waterfront property. In 2011, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) selected Davitt Design Build as its Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY). The coveted award is the industry’s highest praise. NARI represents more than 8,200 member companies nationwide, comprised of 63,000 remodeling contractors.

  This

For
 more

29
years,
 Davitt’s
extensive
 experience
with
meticulously

 has
allowed

all
 zoning

 which
 are
 mandated
 by
 the
Rhode

 DEM. “This
home
 on
 Sand

Cove
Road
proved
to
 be
a
 great
 match
for
our
 skill
set,
because
 of
 its
 challenges
and
location.
  Our
 client
 also
 requested
 we
keep
the
first

interiors,
 as
 they
were,
in

to

within

 adds
Davitt.
“Preserving
the
first
 floor
finishes
while
 removing
 the
 existing
 roof
 and
 adding
the
second
 story
 presented
quite
 the
 challenge.
And
 we
had
a
 4th
 of
 July
 move‐in
date,
 which
meant
 dealing
 with
 the
harsh
winter
 weather
 to
 get
 it
 all
 done
o n
time.
To
 pull
it
 off,
 we
 tented
 and
heated
the
first floor,
 and
 pre cut
the
roof.
  It
 was
like
an
old‐fashioned
 barn‐raising.
  Ultimately
 we
 were
able
 to
 save
 the
first
 floor
 finishes
along
 with
all
 the
 waterside
 windows
and
doors.”
“The
end
result
 was
more
than
we
ever
hoped
 for.
 Our
little
1950s
cottage
 has
been
transformed
 into
a
beautifully
 crafted,
 2‐story
home,
 with
 sublime
architectural
 details,
 big
enough
for
the
 family,
and
 with
 a
magnificent
ocean
view,”
 adds
Morris.
“We
 couldn’t
be
happier.”
Davitt’s
work
can
